Join in the Celebration of the Launch of the EcoCommons in Second Life
Environmental nonprofits and their supporters host a grand opening celebration, Earth Day, Wed. April 22nd
(Come see my latest island for Nonprofit Commons!)
Wednesday, April 22nd, 11 AM PT/SLT, on the new EcoCommons island in Second Life: http://slurl.com/secondlife/ECO%20Commons/5/4/29
EcoCommons is a virtual location (sim) designed for environmental organizations in the 3D virtual world of Second Life. Developed by TechSoup’s Nonprofit Commons team in partnership with OneWorld.net and OneClimate Island in Second Life, EcoCommons provides a network for environmentally-focused nonprofits to promote awareness, community-building and environmental education efforts in the virtual world and beyond. Through EcoCommons and the Nonprofit Commons as a whole, environmental organizations may join this alliance to increase impact. Members can host virtual meetings, lectures, and other events by tapping into a thriving, existing virtual community of early adopters and technologists. Individuals and organizations around the world can connect through EcoCommons, while also reducing their carbon footprint by eliminating the need to travel to a physical meeting place.
Launching on Earth Day, Wed. April 22nd, in the virtual world of Second Life, this interactive event will feature a keynote speech by Jacqueline Chenault, New Media Specialist U.S. House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming http://globalwarming.house.gov, and will be broadcasted live from Second Life.
The launch event will include educational sessions and presentations, and is a part of the TechSoup Global GreenTech Initiative's month-long campaign: Telegreening Your Work , to educate social benefit organizations on how to save money and the environment by using technologies, such as Second Life, to work remotely and collaborate online.

About the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life
Nonprofit Commons consists of three virtual locations (sims), with a fourth underway. Housing over 80 social benefit organizations in virtual offices, and over 400 members who are not residnets, but still are community-volunteers, the Nonprofit Commons is managed by an entirely volunteer-run community of nonprofit employees, under the leadership of TechSoup Global: http://www.techsoup.org.
Nonprofit Commons was designed to lower the barriers of access to Second Life, to create a community of practice for nonprofits to explore and learn about the virtual world, and to investigate the many ways in which nonprofits might utilize this unique environment. Through this community, we provide free office space to qualifying groups, meet and network, create a cooperative learning environment and foster outreach, education, fund-raising, all in a virtual space. Our focus is on providing an accessible entry-point to Second Life and on creating a community of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) for effective collaboration and support. We believe that Second Life is a wonderful place not just to entertain, but also to educate, inspire, and work together to assist our fellow avatars (and the humans behind them). You do not have to be a resident of the Nonprofit Commons to get involved with our community. We welcome all who wish to join us as partners, collaborators or supporters.
Nonprofit Commons' first sim was donated by Anshe Chung Studios and the Nonprofit Commons 2nd sim was donated by TakingIT Global. The third Nonprofit Commons location, EcoCommons, was developed in partnership with OneWorld.net/OneClimate Island specifically for environmentally-oriented organizations. The Nonprofit Commons' fourth sim will be focused on health-related nonprofits, and will launch in conjunction with the NetSquared Confernece on May 27th, 2009.
Members of Nonprofit Commons meet each Friday at 8:30 PST/SLT at Plush Nonprofit Commons Ampitheater. Visitors are always welcome to join us in making a difference one pixel at a time.

In Kenzo, Common Cure, Rhiannon Chatnoir and many Second Life luminaries are joining forces at the Web 2.0 Expo in NYC to launch the new Amoration.net and celebrate our partnership with the Vesuvius Group. We're having a great time sharing virtual worlds and the future of interactive media with the traditional web communities. While we meet quite a few people who are familiar with SL, there are very few people in the traditional web world who are thinking about the 3D web and the future of our integrated communications. This is a great time to be an avatar worldchanger!

www.aplacefordreams.com continues to build toward our pilot project with the Transitions project in the Phoenix, AZ area.
Help us find programmers and curriculum development support as we grow a groundbreaking new set of tools for anyone in transition.
Right now we need support in:
* Finding new and donated computers, software, peripherals
* Programmers willing to work with Google and OpenSocial tools
* CSS and web development specialist volunteer
* Students and faculty at ASU to build interest in this program
* Grantwriting and editing our upcoming applications
* Curriculum development for enterprise, virtual worlds, communications
* Pilot program ideas including innovative uses of XO/OLPC, green wifi at community level, donations of cell phones and digital media tools for those building new businesses out of transition
WHY?
- Anyone can find emergency food, shelter and medical services in their local area with one click.
- Creative and talented entrepreneurs can find support to train and start new businesses.
- Service learning opportunities between college students, social media leaders and those transitioning
- Removing the stigma of homelessness by providing remote work opportunities available from any location
For today's address before the UN Climate Change Conference the congressman from Massachusetts chose to appear in Second Life rather than fly to Bali and address the crowd directly. His talk on climate change and the metaverse of possibilities echoes the policy reflected at globalwarming.house.gov
Rep.
Markey, head of the House's committee on climate change, fielded questions on education, conservation and the "use" of Nature.....should we consider nature something to be used until those resources no longer exist? Do we have a role in preserving land, planting new forests, considering the greening of our cities?
This historic speech in Second Life wants to prove a point about energy use and climate change. For Rep. Markey to address the crowd for 20 minutes in Bali would take 5.6 tons of carbon emitted in flight from Washington. How many were used in Second Life?
"The technology is moving so fast that this really is just the beginning." Daniel Nelson from OneWorld UK noted. Daniel is also featured at the end of this In Kenzo machinima video attached from today's interactive town hall meeting with Rep. Markey at OneWorld Meetings Island in Second Life.
We've come a long way in a few months! The next major AMO event is happening this Sunday December 16th from 11-2PM at AMO Island in Second Life, a dance party to benefit Great Strides with DJ Nexeus Fatale. Bring out your horses and help us raise money for equine therapy. Every boogie counts.
GIVING CIRCLE
The ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD GIVE XO CHALLENGE ends soon. Do you have someone with small hands who would love the XO laptop's ease and portability? Give one get one, a great opportunity to share goodwill.
At AMO we've seen the potential for empowering young talent to do more with their digital skills. In the last two years our interns have gone on to great work with professional companies and nonprofit organizations...all for scripting or designing items in Second Life! Those who still wonder about the power of the virtual world for education should visit Holy Meatballs, New Media Consortium and the SLEDucators who are teaching and taking on exciting new research endeavors in the wild petri dish of the metaverse.

Bridgebuilding and Rebuilding
For the last few weeks we have been coordinating with friends at Madre Grande, a monastery and retreat farm near San Diego and the Mexican border town of Tecate. During the Harris fire around Halloween they lost most of their residences, archives and gathering spaces; seven monks are now living in one building together as they work out a long term rebuilding plan in the midst of codes, permits and inspections, cleanup and fire debris removal. One of the monks was an interactive designer for the Cartoon Network, another a financial officer in London; this bright young ecumenical group of leaders has appreciated the support of the AMO community along with your gifts dedicated to this rebuilding effort. We were glad to go to Madre Grande with Burners without Borders last week and we will blog in more detail with photos soon. Thanks to Marta Collier, Brent Heyning and Rob Darman for their wizardry with pipes and electrical tech!
The leaders in AMO never cease to amaze me. Thank you all for getting out there and doing what you love to do most. Come visit us soon in meatspace, metaspace or any space!

Those of you who know our work know that we've stopped producing machinima over the last few months. There's a handful of reasons why we've put our machinima releases on hold for 2007:
1) Overheating laptops!
2) Waiting for Windlight
3) Hoping for a Machinima Camera for true broadcast-quality captures (see the pic at right from Hollywood Games Summit for the Gamecaster machinima camera)
4) Unreliable access to platforms and sims
You can help us take on at least one of these challenges by voting for Amoration in the Blackbird/Wikia challenge to win a new HP desktop with a water cooling system that claims to be up to the virtual world overheating challenge. Help us out and vote today, leave us comments and let's move this media forward!

Nonprofits celebrate new home in Second Life!
San Francisco Meets the Metaverse: 32 Nonprofits and their supporters will host a grand opening celebration Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. in their new locations at the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life.
Generously donated by the world's first virtual millionaire, Anshe Chung, this nonprofits-only space, managed by TechSoup, creates and houses a community of nonprofits in the online virtual world of Second Life. This community of practice is entirely volunteer-run and hosts organizations from across the globe. To date, they have created a community blog and a resource-rich wiki, and have held mixed-reality events, workshops, and regular weekly town hall meetings.
This “sim,” or virtual acre of land, was designed as a pilot project to lower the barriers of access to Second Life, and to create a community of practice for nonprofits to explore and learn about the virtual world. The Nonprofit Commons provides free office space to qualifying groups to meet and collaborate, create a cooperative learning environment, and foster outreach, education and fundraising all in a virtual space.
“We believe that Second Life provides a unique platform to collaborate, educate, inspire, and build awareness. In the Nonprofit Commons, our goal is to assist our community members achieve their dreams in this exciting new technology that we see as the future of the Web. We welcome all who wish to join us as partners or supporters,” said Glitteractica Cookie, avatar for Susan Tenby, Senior Manager of Community Development, TechSoup Network.
“Building vibrant communities starts with great events that bring organizations together for dialogue and exchange,” notes In Kenzo (Evonne Heyning), Creative Director at Amoration.org. “For nonprofits joining the virtual world for the first time, the Nonprofit Commons offers a free place to connect with other leaders.”
The Gala event will be a mixed-reality launch party, complete with networking, a panel of speakers (feature Susan Tenby and Jeska Dzwigalski in the real world and Anshe Chung in Second Life) and audio/video interaction between the real world and the virtual world.
Audience members in the Second Life portion of the event are expected to include nonprofit commons residents and their invited guests, media representatives and journalists, Linden Lab staff, and those interested in nonprofits and philanthropy. Guests are also welcome to join us in the live-event in San Francisco, with streaming audio and video content between the two worlds.
